How did it all begin?

The history of the jewellery industry in Toronto began in 1946 when the Metal Arts Guild was created. Its main goal was to promote and develop products made of ferrous and nonferrous metals among the population.
Later, the Guild organised jewellery courses. There, famous jewellers and lecturers taught people the art of creating products from precious metals.
Development of the jewellery business in Toronto

In 1967, Canada and the whole world were experiencing a jewellery boom. In the same year, Toronto held a jewellery exhibition. It was the first time Canadian jewellers presented their products. A total of 120 exhibits were shown to the public at the event, 40 of them were made by Canadians. This has increased the prestige of the country’s jewellery among experts and customers worldwide.
Many colleges in Toronto have started teaching students the art of goldsmithing. The Haakon Bakken School specialising in craft and design was established in 1967. It was created by a jeweller from the School of American Craftsmen who was a teacher there too.
The local Metalsmith Magazine wrote that the learning process at that school was rigorous, but its teachers were the best jewellery artists.
In 1968, the first stores were opened in several Toronto neighbourhoods, including Yorkville, Yonge, Dundas, Eglinton and Warden. Their assortment consisted of products, which were made exclusively by Canadian artists.
Several entrepreneurs opened a one-stop shop on Yonge Street (near the Eaton Centre). Torontonians could buy a variety of precious accessories, such as gems for engagement rings or necklaces there.
Since 1968, the Yorkville area has become one of the best neighbourhoods in the city. It was known for its unique latte and frequent celebrities’ visits.
Many jewellery stores were opened on almost every Yorkville street. Serli & Siroan, Royal Des Versailles Jewellery, Maison Birks and Tiffany & Co. brands were among them.
Modern and famous jewellery stores in Toronto

Considering all the information, we can confidently say that Tiffany & Co has become one of the most authoritative jewellery brands in the city.
In 2013, Tiffany & Co opened a store in Toronto, which occupies 2 floors and 11,100 ft2. That store is considered one of the largest in Canada.
In addition to Tiffany & Co, there are other famous premium brands in Toronto, such as Birks, Cartier, People’s, Chanel and Louis Vuitton.
But not only famous brands make Toronto the jewellery capital of Canada. 25 independent jewellers united and founded the Golden Mile Jewelry Exchange, which was created in order to continue a family business.
Among the jewellers we should also mention Susan Shaw and Melissa Gobel. In 2016, women heard their friends complaining about the lack of everyday jewellery on the market. Then the friends decided to open a jewellery store in Toronto, where they sell gold engagement rings and bracelets.
It is also worth noting the following artists:
- Armed Jewelry (which makes solid pendants with gems).
- Wild Moon Jewelry (whose products are made only from recycled glass beads).
- Maison Raksha (Post Malone and Joey Bada$$ are among its most famous customers).
