The Story Behind the Brand’s Creation

The story of Roots began in 1973 when Michael Budman and Don Green initially founded a footwear company. That same year, the budding entrepreneurs opened their first store on Yonge St. in Toronto. Just a couple of months later, Roots acquired the Upin and Ipin company and opened its own leather factory. By the end of 1973, Roots stores had opened not only in Toronto but also in Vancouver, Montreal, and several locations in the USA.

Roots grew rapidly, and within two years, its product range had significantly expanded. In 1975, the factory was producing over 2,000 pairs of shoes. The number of retail locations also increased—by 1977, there were 65 stores across North America and Europe. The company employed 250 people.

Company Growth

In 1977, the company began producing shoes with wedge soles. Classic handbags also started appearing in their product line. Additionally, the brand began selling bags, footwear, belts, and leather jackets.

In 1979, Roots launched its first custom-ordered menswear line. This line started with leather jackets, which were manufactured in a small building in Port Credit. The following year, many stores in the US and Europe were closed. Instead, Roots began to expand within Canada.

In Canada, the brand started producing t-shirts and sweatshirts and created the Beaver Canoe label. In 1983, clothing and items for an active outdoor lifestyle were created under the Beaver Canoe brand.

Roots Today

Today, Roots offers a wide range of products, including:

  • Apparel for men, women, and children: from casual t-shirts to stylish sweaters.
  • Leather goods: bags, wallets, and other accessories.
  • Activewear: comfortable and functional items for an active lifestyle.
  • Home goods: decor items that reflect Canadian style.

Furthermore, Roots uses environmentally friendly materials and supports local manufacturers.

In the 21st century, Roots has over 120 stores in North America and more than 100 international retail locations. The brand is purchased online in over 70 countries worldwide.

Interestingly, many Canadians recognize the brand by its signature logo: a beaver against a backdrop of branches. The logo was introduced by the company in 1985. This beaver on a branch became iconic for the brand. It’s worth remembering that the beaver is Canada’s national animal, symbolizing industriousness and resilience. This is why the logo has become an integral part of Canadian fashion and culture.

It’s also noteworthy that Roots is actively involved in social responsibility: supporting various charitable initiatives and projects aimed at environmental protection and local community development. For example, the brand has donated over a million dollars to support initiatives in Canada.

The Roots brand remains popular among young people because it successfully blends tradition with modern trends. This has been an insightful look into the journey of this iconic Toronto-born brand.
