She received her secondary education at Naparima Girls&#8217; High School in San Fernando. Dionne Brand then decided to move to Canada. She studied at the University of Toronto, earning a Bachelor&#8217;s degree in English and Philosophy. Later, Dionne earned a Master&#8217;s degree in the Philosophy of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Career_Development\"><\/span>Career Development<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dionne Brand&#8217;s writing career began in 1978. That year, her first book, <em>Fore Day Morning: Poems<\/em>, was published. Following this, Brand actively pursued her creative work. She published poetry, various other works, and also collaborated on documentary films with the <strong>National Film Board of Canada<\/strong>. She has also held several academic positions: Assistant Professor of English at the University of Guelph, Professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph, and a University Research Chair. Additionally, she served as the poetry editor for McClelland &amp; Stewart, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada. Furthermore, she represents Canadian literature at international forums and festivals. There&#8217;s a folk saying that roughly translates to: &#8220;Where you are born is where you will thrive,&#8221; implying that a person can only truly achieve success in their native land. However, <strong>Dionne Brand shatters this assertion<\/strong>. She moved to Canada to pursue higher education. It was in Toronto that Brand began her creative journey.
